Summer is almost here and there's nothing that says summer like a backyard get together. We have fond memories of all the backyard shindigs at our home and friends and family and of course all the food. One of our favourite things to make and eat are kebabs, they are so versatile, add chicken, add veggies, whatever you want and of course seasoning. A new favourite are these chicken kebabs with Za'atar Recipe. What is Za'atar you might ask?Chicken Kebabs with Za'atar Recipe (1)

Let me tell you this Chicken Kebabs with Za'atar Recipe is about to become your new favourite. Even better the Za'atar spice mix can be used on oh so many things from all your favourite veggies to other proteins too! Za'atar is a generic name used in the Middle East for an amazing blend of herbs. Usually it's a blend of dried thyme, oregano, marjoram, sumac, toasted sesame seeds, and salt. Like many ancient spice blends there are always variations and ours does have a slight variation. If you can't find Za'atar in a market near you for our Chicken Kebabs Za'atar recipe, you can easily blend your own and keep it in a jar to use whenever you want and you will want to use it a lot!Chicken Kebabs with Za'atar Recipe (2)As a side note "kebab" is the original wording usually as "shish kebab" but a lot of times here in North American it is referred to as kabob. Either way it's tantalizing chunks of meat on a stick and when you try our chicken kebabs with za'atar recipe you'll be in love. Feel free to add veggies ontoyour kebab for that grilled taste but this time we went with all chicken and served it on a bed of refreshing veggies for a yummy pairing. When it comes to our food that I cook with I demand quality. After all, what we eat fuels our body, affects our internal systems to our skin and more so quality matters. It's why we always buy and eat only chicken that has the Raised by a Canadian Chicken Farmer logo on it (like the one above). I know that I'm getting quality Canadian chicken which is grain-fed, free of hormones and steroids, that's important to me! Not only that butCanadian chicken is raised here in Canada according to nationally-set, mandatory food safety and animal care standards. We may be carnivores but we believe in these care standards.

Chicken Kebabs with Za'atar Recipe (2024)

FAQs

Is chicken breast or thigh better for kebabs? ›

I've specified boneless skinless chicken thighs for this recipe; they're juicier and more flavorful than boneless skinless chicken breasts, and they also hold up better when using an acidic marinade; yogurt or lemon-based marinades can make boneless skinless chicken breasts leathery.

Is za'atar used in Mediterranean cuisine? ›

Za'atar (pronounced Zaah-tar) is most identified with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. A combination of herbs, sesame seeds, sumac, and salt, it is one of the world's unique and best seasonings.

How do you keep chicken kebabs from drying out? ›

Marinate the chicken on the skewers.

Make sure to pour any leftover marinade on top of the skewers, so the chicken really soaks up the juices as it marinates. Also if you're doing that, there's no need to soak the skewers before grilling. All those juices will soak up the skewers and keep them moist.

How long to marinate chicken? ›

You can marinate chicken anywhere from 2 hours up to 24 hours, though marinating chicken for even 15 to 30 minutes can impart flavor and moisture into smaller pieces of meat. Generally, bone-in cuts of chicken, such as wings, drumsticks and breasts, will require a longer marinade time than their boneless counterparts.

What do you eat Zaatar with? ›

How to use Zaatar Spice? Keep this seasoning blend handy and you will think of it as a finishing flavor for all kinds of dishes, like fried eggs, salad dressings, roasted and fresh vegetables and chicken, dips such as hummus and baba ganoush, bread, potatoes, atop avocado toast and kale chips.

Why do you put baking soda in kebabs? ›

Without the help of baking soda, proteins in meat are attracted to one another and squeeze out juices as the meat cooks. Baking soda transforms the meat, making it more tender and more moist.

Can you prep chicken kabobs the night before? ›

THE CHICKEN & BASTE

Mix together and if you have the time let it marinade from 30 minutes up to overnight. After marinating, thread the chicken pieces onto skewers. If using wooden skewers, make sure they have soaked in water for 30 minutes to prevent them from burning.

How do you know when chicken kebabs are done? ›

Cook skewers on the preheated grill, turning and brushing frequently with barbeque sauce, until chicken is no longer pink in the center and the juices run clear, about 15 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 165 degrees F (74 degrees C).

How many chicken skewers per person? ›

How many meat/veggie kabob skewers do I make per person for a party? - Quora. It depends upon the size of the skewer. Aim for about 6 ounces of meat per person. You could split that up into 2 skewers or one.

Is chicken thigh or breast nicer? ›

Way More Flavorful

Chicken thighs are a fattier cut of meat, which means they're going to have more intense, rich flavor than their white meat counterparts. No matter the cooking preparation, chicken thighs will always yield a richer, more flavorful product.

What is the most common meat in kebabs? ›

The traditional meat for kebabs is most often lamb meat, but regional recipes may include beef, goat, chicken, fish, or even pork (depending on whether or not there are specific religious prohibitions).
